Families Can Apply for the Autism Spectrum Disorder Voucher Program Beginning June 1

Families of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) ages three to 17 can apply, beginning June 1, for autism voucher program services for the upcoming state fiscal year that starts July 1. New and participating families are encouraged to apply during the annual enrollment period.

Participation is currently limited to 53 children per year. Families are served on a first come, first served basis, and must apply annually.

Vouchers help pay for respite care for family caregivers, assistive technology such as sensory or safety equipment, caregiver training, and other support services such as tutoring. The purpose of the voucher program is to enhance the quality of life of qualifying children and to meet the unique needs of their families. It also fills a gap by providing resources for non-therapy related services for families who do not qualify for other help.

ADA Q & A: Summer Fun

The arrival of spring prompts parents to begin the search for summer activities for their children. Besides extended school year special education services designed by school districts and a few programs that serve the needs of children with disabilities exclusively, parents of children with disabilities often have a difficult time finding social and recreational activities for their kids to participate in their community.

However, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) should make more options available to families by ensuring their right to participate in community and neighborhood programs in integrated settings. School districts, park boards, community centers, libraries, and science, history and art museums that offer summertime classes, day camps, recreation programs, art activities, or nature hikes must make their programs accessible to individuals with disabilities. Parents should know that they can expect these kinds of programs to meet their child's needs, too.

From the Pacer Center, here are some examples of how the ADA affects such programshttp://www.pacer.org/publications/adaqa/summer.asp
