What is Parent Advising?

Advising, also referred to as technical assistance, is one of all Parent Training and Information Centers' identified scopes of service. The goal of parent advising is to educate and empower parents by helping them understand their rights and guiding them along a pathway to success. We encourage parents to be problem-solvers and to be a part of the educational support team for their children.

Our Parent Advisors help families to...

  • Understand IDEA, 504 and related laws.
  • Prepare for and participate in their child's IEP meeting in ways that help to meet their child's educational goals.
  • Understand the dispute resolution and due process system and benefit from early dispute resolution activities.
  • Understand their child's unique condition and its impact on parenting and education.

What Parent Advisors do...

  • We listen, so that parents feel heard and deeply understood.
  • We do not judge
  • We help families to reach out to appropriate partners in the education system and move from a position of talking past each other to a position of deep trust, respect, and team competence.
  • We offer strategies, solutions and ideas that will benefit the whole team in working together to provide students with Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE).
  • We reassure parents that their underlying concerns for their child's well-being are not only completely legitimate but shared by the rest of the team.
