The Special Education Process in North Dakota - Pathfinder Services Webinar Series

Pathfinder Services of ND has developed a series of webinars focusing on the special education process implemented in ND schools. This series is for parents of children with learning difficulties and for the professionals who provide services to each of these families and their children. Information used in the development of each webinar is based on information from the ND Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) Office of Special Education guidance documents and the Center for Parent Information and Resources (CPIR) Building the Legacy: IDEA Training Curriculum.

The Why, What, and How of the Special Education Evaluation Process

The Why, What, and How of the Special Education Evaluation Process is a two-part webinar series designed to provide introductory guidance relating to the ND special education evaluation process. Included in these webinars is information from the ND Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) document Guidelines: Evaluation Process.

Part 1 of this series describes the process followed by parents and professionals when a child is not progressing, according to expectations, and may need additional services in an early childhood program or school setting. Participants will gain an understanding of why a special education evaluation is completed and what the key requirements of a special education evaluation are.

Part 2 of the series offers insight into how the key evaluation requirements discussed in Part 1 are incorporated into the main components of the ND special education evaluation process. Participants are provided a general description of these components which include the Student Profile: Evaluation, the Assessment Plan, and the Integrated Written Assessment Report. Also included in this webinar is an overview of the topics of Reevaluation and Independent Educational Evaluation.

Building an Individualized Education Program (IEP)

Building an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a two-part webinar series for parents and professionals new to the North Dakota IEP planning process. Included in these webinars is information from the ND Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) document Guidelines: Individualized Education Program Planning Process.

Part 1, The Bricks and Mortar of the IEP Process, includes a summary of several key requirements from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) relating to IEP timelines and the qualifications and responsibilities of required IEP team members. Resources are presented that provide guidance on building and maintaining a strong partnership between all IEP team members.

Understanding the IEP planning process will assist IEP team members in developing a well-planned and comprehensive IEP. Part 2, Individualized Education Program (IEP): The Blueprint, provides an overview of the main purposes of the IEP planning process which includes a decision making framework comprised of key IEP components. An overview of the components included in IEPs that are implemented in ND schools is provided to parents and professionals.
