The North Dakota Special Education Process is a series of workshops developed by Pathfinder Services of ND.
Whether you are a parent of children with learning difficulties, or a professional who provides services for families and their children, these workshops are designed to help you understand how special education is implemented in the state of North Dakota. The information presented in these workshops comes mainly from the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) Office of Special Education and the Center for Parent Information and Resources training curriculum Building the Legacy: IDEA.

Part 1 of this two-part series focuses on the process that is implemented in ND to identify a student who is possibly needing special education and related services and the key requirements of a special education evaluation that is accurate, comprehensive and individualized.

Creating Stronger Partnerships through Dispute Resolution
A key to a student's success in school is a strong partnership between parents and school professionals. Creating Stronger Partnerships through Dispute Resolution reviews the importance of positive and productive communication skills in building strong partnerships. Participants are presented an overview of each of the formal dispute resolution options available through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), focusing on the benefits of each option and the process to request the dispute resolution option in ND.
Following School Rules - Disability and Discipline
All students, including students with disabilities, deserve safe, well-disciplined schools and supportive and positive learning environments. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) discipline regulations provide the protection of essential rights of students and parents in disciplinary situations and provide the authority and flexibility of school personnel to maintain a safe learning environment for all students. Following School Rules, Disabilities and Discipline, introduces several of the key terms described in the IDEA discipline regulations.
Least Restrictive Environment - Participation and Progress for All Students
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) regulations offer important guidance focused on providing a free and appropriate public education (FAPE) for a student with a disability alongside their peers to the maximum extent appropriate in the student's least restrictive environment. In this workshop, participants will learn the meaning of least restrictive environment (LRE) for a student with a disability and become familiar with several of the requirements that the student's team must consider and document when developing a comprehensive and appropriate IEP that leads to education in the student's least restrictive environments.
